What is red light therapy?

Red light therapy, also known as photobiomodulation or low-level light therapy, is a non-invasive therapeutic technique that uses red or near-infrared light to stimulate various cellular processes in the body. This therapy is based on the concept that certain wavelengths of light can penetrate the skin and interact with cells to promote healing and reduce inflammation.

RED LIGHT THERAPY

How does it work?

Red light therapy works by utilizing specific wavelengths of light, primarily in the red and near-infrared range, to interact with cells and tissues in the body. The primary target of red light therapy is the mitochondria, which are the powerhouses of the cells responsible for generating energy.

Mitochondrial Stimulation

Red Light stimulate the mitochondria for producing energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is the energy currency of the cells, leading to increased ATP production. This energy can help cells perform their functions more effectively, which could aid in tissue repair and overall cellular health.

Increased Circulation

Red light therapy can promote vasodilation, which is the widening of blood vessels. This can improve blood flow and circulation to the treated area. Enhanced circulation can deliver more oxygen and nutrients to cells, while also aiding in the removal of waste products. This can contribute to better tissue healing and reduced inflammation.

Stimulation of Collagen and Fibroblasts

Collagen is a protein that plays a crucial role in maintaining the structure and elasticity of skin and connective tissues. Red light therapy may stimulate the production of collagen and promote the activity of fibroblasts, which are cells responsible for producing collagen. This can contribute to improved skin texture and the reduction of wrinkles.

Pain Modulation

Red light therapy might influence nerve cells and pain receptors. It's thought that the therapy can trigger the release of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving compounds. Additionally, the reduction of inflammation and improved circulation can help alleviate pain and discomfort.

Regulation of Cellular Signaling

Red and near-infrared light may influence various cellular signaling pathways, including those related to growth, repair, and survival. By affecting these pathways, red light therapy could promote cellular health and resilience.
